BRIEF SUMMARY

Henderson and Milstein's (2003) Wheel of Resilience is a method for promoting resilience through six steps: 1. Enriching bonds: fostering relationships between people and a positive climate in the environment; 2. Setting clear and firm boundaries: giving clear behavioural guidelines that promote cooperation and a sense of being part of a group; 3. Teaching life skills: critical thinking and problem-solving activities; 4. Providing support and affection: fostering a sense of belonging, solidarity and collaboration; 5. Setting and communicating high expectations: highlighting the person's skills and abilities and encouraging self-improvement; 6. Providing opportunities for meaningful participation: encouraging the person to be active and take responsibility. Steps 1, 2 and 3 are about mitigating risk in the environment and steps 4, 5 and 6 are about building resilience directly. This method is successfully used in educational, family and community institutions.
