BRIEF SUMMARY

Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is related to applied behaviour analysis but goes one step ahead, as it looks beyond observable behaviour and examines what function the behaviour may be serving. Knowing what is valuable, important, and reinforcing to individuals can help caregivers support their clients toward alternative ways of behaving that will still meet client needs. The basics of FBA include: Analysis, Behaviour, and Consequence. Analysis occurs when professionals direct the client to perform an action to identify existing or previous behaviour. Behaviour is the response from the client: successful performance, non-compliance, or no response. Consequence is the therapist’s response “which can range from strong positive reinforcement (i.e., a special treat, verbal praise) to a strong negative response, such as ‘No!’” (Morris, n.d.). This method can be applied by caregiving institutions (to support aggressive patients) and by schools (when dealing with students with problematic behaviour).
